So, I found this really awesome paper made out of super thin cuts of wood. WOOD! How could I not make a Tiki man, which is totally one of my favorite things/subject matters/genre etc.??? I am doing a matching one eventually, a nerdy one. Aw. I made this one read because I love books and reading. Here is to hoping I will have enough time to update more often with new things. And also that I will have enough time to continue updating stuff, for realz.

Strange to be doing actual illustration again? Its been a while. My other blog/concept obsession has kept me busy, not to mention moving as well as reaching goals and what not. So while I should feel bad, I totally do not (I tell you lies). I can do fun stuff like this when I feel my portfolio is up to speed with what is being demanded (which will be never).

Anyway, this was for a Dia De Los Muertos show that I unfortunately didn't find until it was too late to even consider submitting, but I did a piece anyway. I am thinking of getting into gallery work. We shall see.

So this isn't completely finished...There will be a cut out border. All ornate and stuff, with foreground elements. Until then, you must live with the juicy center.

He is actually pretty hardco' (almost in the most literal of senses), and I am seeing him tomorrow so I thought I would make him something more appropriate. I was thinking about putting a santa hat on the frankenstein head (because it IS an ornament) but I decided not to so he could hang it from his car rearview mirror for year round delightment. p.s. 50th blog entry for the year! Here is a sneak peek of a desk calendar I am designing. I am still trying to limit myself to three or four colors (per page/month) for this project simply because then it is cheaper to have it Offset printed. Eventually. If ever. Oye. We will see. I am going to go back to make it all extra crisply cohesive. Also, the letters and numbers are going to be more lined up. I have lots of kerning to do. And I might add word bubbles. THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS!!!

I have been busy this week (doing things for The Pier Aquarium, running down to Saraslowta to Ringling to talk to my favorite teacher blahblahblah) and thus have not been home to work on art (what I would rather do)

So, in leu of the lack of work, I am going to show you yet another sewing project I completed. It is what started out a library bag, but ended up my carry-all...literally. It still does the majority of library book carrying because I love me some books. In an almost unhealthy way.

Seeing as I have not posted in forever....this is totally what I turned into after returning home:

Sloth enjoying the little things. Except its more like I am healing after a very long year of being very, very alone. It is just like ripping a band-aide off of a scab, so that it's all raw and stuff and then it heals pretty well except there is a tiny scar after its all done. I'm still at the scab stage, but at least I am not all infected and gangrened and shit....although, it amuses me to think of what kind of artwork that would issue forth. AWESOME. In the true sense of the word, not the slang. I've been doing actual freelance work but I totally am not a freelance gal.

I have shut myself off from the world for a bit, and I am not going to lie, it is nice. I need it right now. My friends understand. No portfolio artwork, just books and gardening and also riding my sweet, sweet MINT GREEN BEACH CRUISER. LOOK AT IT AND ITS MAGNIFICENCE:

I will ride it to the library. On the trail. Maybe to screen printing classes. Ironically, there will be no beach cruising, seeing as the beach does not have sidewalks. but I finally own a MINT GREEN BEACH CRUISER. I haven't named it yet. But don't even mess with white wall tires and a white seat. If this bike were a jive, I would dance all night long. You heard me.

Plus I have been doing alot of hands on 3-d stuff so even when I have "taken a break" I am never taking a break. List of "crafty mccraftpants" things:

-A super sweet 1960's airline purse to sew

-A stuffed animal to sew, and also stuff

-A stuffed pillow pb and J sandwich with a side of kick ass

-A quilt, but an awesome one that isnt all country and full of star spangled crap

-Mosaic vase/pencil holder, for pencils or maybe even pens or just pennies and straw wrappers

-A fabric...painting? collage? I guess collage painting?

-A fabric portfolio for other places not here

-Various "to do for Etsy Shop" projects. Including dish towels. Yeah, boyee.

Anyway enough updating. I will slowly be getting back on schedule as I get bored. So yes.

There will be things popping up here and there as I get the anna train out of the station and back up the hill.

Months ago, maybe longer, I wrote over 5 chapters of Ella Umbrella. Then, like I do all the time to important things, I lost it. Just like I lost my W2. OH YES. Itemize this, bitch. ANYWAY I had lost poor Ella so when I started to do the first chapter, I was trying to remember all the clever things I had written. But, alas, despite the snow storm that shouldn't be happening outside, the sun shined down for me and I found the story. In which, when I reread, and then cried a little, and then read more, that I had missed alot. Which means, how many pages am I actually keeping that I have already done? Oh well, such is life. I hope I can salvage some of the 7 pages.

Here was the actual beginning, which I think is adorable:

"Chpt. 1 In Which We Meet Our Heros

Ella Umbrella was tall for her age. She was also odd, so when she stated to the adults "It is time for an adventure!" they all said "yes, yes Ella.." and dismissed her quite rudely. So, she decided that in order to have a grand adventure she mustn't be alone.

Ella also decided exactly who would be perfect for such a journey.... "

blahblahblah...something about cucumber sandwiches and mint jelly and the picnic....

ah, another excerpt, which totally cracks me up and makes me wonder what the HELL I was doing when I wrote such nonsense:

"Being a slightly awkward, yet frightening fellow, the terrible Marquis of Centipedes was in quite a mood. Today was his birthday and he just knew that what he wanted most dearly could not be his...yet. Kidnapping the Prince of Frogs had seemed like a good idea at the time, but now the King and his infernal hordes of green guardsmen and the like seemed to know exac

tly who took the young frog. And so, the Marquis expected to spend his birthday in endless tactical meetings, pushing little metal army men across a board that was shaped like the surrounding landscape, NOT having cake and NOT opening presents. Of course, he would never admit to liking these things, after all, he is supposed to be a tough and ruthless leader."

It continues for forever. Originally this was supposed to be more of a graphic novel in the way of N. Gaiman's Stardust, more text than picture, but that has obviously changed. It's ok, though. I don't mind redoing things if it means I get to redo them RIGHT. Oh, and, I have decided the sound of Ella Umbrella is the band Taken By Trees. Listen and all things will be clear to you.

So here is the first piece of the "grand" thesis redo. So long story short I didn't have as much time or energy or know how in the specific media to make my senior thesis how I wanted. Plus I was taking 5 classes, figuring out living arrangements, freaking out about graduation. So yes,now I have time. Well, kind of, not really. The thesis idea was originally an 8 line poem, dropped down to six because of time constraints. The poem consisted of fables, but not just fables, but what happens to the characters after ever after. That was the title: After Ever After.

Here is the poem, simple as hell in it's form but with a deeper meaning:

Snow White had grown fat and grey

and Red Riding Hood had had enough

while young Alice decided to stay

the Little Mermaid's adjustment was tough

Dear Captain J. Hook was able to fly

the lonely Pinocchio made friends from the rough

Princess Cinderella gave domestics a try

While Prince John gave back most of the stuff.

This one is about (obviously) time taking beauty away. Snow White, the fairest of them all, has lived a life of luxury and want. She holds the apple that would once take her ability to live away, but keep her young and beautiful forever. The apple is the key to her everlasting beauty, albeit death. Supposed to be a kind of commentary on how a lot of people would rather risk death when it came to being ugly and fat (plastic surgery anyone?), or would actually choose death if it meant they would forever be encapsulated/remembered as being exquisite. She is maybe tempting herself, questioning herself if her decision was the right one. What would be your decision? Think aboot THAT.

So, while I am working on my nasty character portfolio (literally, the characters are nasty, full of no goodness) I decided to take a break and go back to doing something enjoyable. Not that yucky characters aren't fun, they are just INCREDIBLY tedious. I was thinking of how many flippin' styles I have, and have fully decided I am exactly half good, half evil. I forgot to post an exciting thing I did in North Dakota. Yes, I used the word exciting and North Dakota in the same sentence. I borrowed my grandpa's tools and made this:

x2 though. Thats right, there are two of them. The pictures came out aweful thanks to my wonderful 5 year old kodak camera the size of a large rodent, so you only get to see one of the brothers. I was going to hang keys on them but decided wall art is better.

Another realization: my cat Toulouse is now shaped like a sweet potato. Literally. Here she is in her tubby glory:

She only posed for like, 5 seconds so this is a very crappy, very short sketch. She's unbearably cute, like OTTER EATING AND GROOMING cute, so I'm thinking we go for some sort of squash shape next. We will see, we will see.

I love shoe shopping, I love looking at them, and I also like buying them. HOWEVER, I absolutely abhore wearing them. I need to be barefoot at all times. That is all.
